A Story of Two Sneakers: Adidas and Puma

Adidas and Puma are now two of the most well-known sportswear brands in the world. They were found by two borthers: Adolf "Adi" Dassler and Rudolf "Rudi" Dassler.  Adi was a sports fanatic spending hours designing shoes, while the older brother "Rudi" is an impressive salesman.

In 1924, both of them worked together and established the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. The Dassler factory was used to produce anti-tank weapons and boots for the military during the second world war.

During World War II, Rudi was called to serve the military and got detained in an American POW camp for a year whereas Adi continued working in the shoe factory. Later, Rudi and Adi became enemies, the reason might be that Rudi felt Adi didn't do anything to get him released when he was in trouble.

Hence in 1947. both the brothers split up. Adi frist named his Addas, but as at that time there was already a children's shoe brand with that name, so he changed it to "Adidas". While Rudi changed his company's from Ruda to "Puma" as the name Ruda wasn't really inspiring.

At first, both of them were competing against each other aggressively. However, in the end, Rudi had an argument with the coach of  German soccer team months before the 1954 World Cup, so as result, the German soccer team was sponsored by Adidas.

The German team didn't disappoint Adi and went on to win that World Cup, the three-stripe shoes the players wore successfully helped Adidas gained its reputation from the world.

Until today, Adidas is still the second biggest sportswear company for the world. It is not just an ordinary sportswear but an icon for fashion favored by many celebrities and athletes.
